Weird Food Recipes

Iguana stew, anyone?

If nothing else, this series has shown you there is no limit as to what some people will eat. The iguana is a scary reptile that some people don’t even want to touch, much less dine on, though we hear it tastes like chicken. Like the crocodile though, you’re not likely to get any here (at least not legally), as the Jamaican iguana, which is endemic to the island, is not to be harmed. But if you’re in some countries of the Americas, eat up.

Iguana stew


1 iguana

2 onions

1 tablespoon salt

6-8 carrots

1 tbsp celantro

1 small ball recardo (a paste made with achiote seeds, oregano etc.)

1 cup vinegar

1 lime

1 sweet pepper

1 tbsp black pepper

1/2 cabbage

2 cloves of garlic

1 can diced tomato

coconut oil


- Skin and clean iguana, then wash it in a mixture of vinegar and lime.

- Mix all seasonings and spices together in a bowl and rub them into the meat.

- Leave the rubbed meat for 30 minutes.

- Pour coconut oil in a pot, just to cover the bottom and place it on the fire.

- When the oil is hot, put in the iguana meat, then cook for another 30 minutes, turning a few times and adding a tip of water if needed. During that time, slice the carrots, tomatoes and cabbage.

- Add them to the meat and cook for 30 minutes.

- Serve with rice and beans.

Deer, dear?

Now for some tasty venison. Deer meat is not as weird as you might think, (we even have white-tailed deer in parts of Portland and and the Blue Mountains). But considering foreigners think we’re weird for eating goat, who are we to argue?

Michael Mischer has unveiled an unusual new artisan chocolate piece for summer: barbecue, made with sauce from fellow Oaklanders Everett and Jones.

“I love barbecue,” explained Mischer, “and one day I was at the grocery store, looking at sauce, and I got this idea.”

While this might sound like a shocking pairing, it definitely doesn’t jolt the palate. Barbecue sauce forms the smoky, slightly spicy base of a soft caramel filling encased in dark Felchlin chocolate from Switzerland. The combination is downright sensible.

Beef Fuel!

(Oklahoma City, OK) – Years ago beef tallow could have been used to grease wheels now Amtrak is using the stuff to power them. The Heartland Flyer will use a bovine based biodiesel as a fuel for the next year in its run between Oklahoma City and Ft. Worth.

The fuel is 20 percent derived from beef fat with the remaining 80 percent coming from petroleum. The biodiesel comes from a Texas manufacturer.

The project is being funded with a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration. It’s hoped the blend will result in fewer pollutants in the engine’s exhaust.

Once the year is up, the locomotive’s engines will be taken apart and examined for any damage.

Barbecue App

“Barbecue” is a classy little iPhone app. It’s one of several cooking game apps including More Toast! More Pizza! and Cupcakes that have come out recently in the iTunes store, where the object of the game is to cook a virtual meal.

In “Barbecue” you “light” a match by striking it against the iPod Touch or iPhone screen. Once the fire is started (you can blow in the microphone to stir the flame), toss corn, shish kebabs, steaks and hot dogs on the grill, brown them and flip them (double tap the screen), taking care not to burn them (drag them off the grill with your finger if you do), unless that’s how you like your meat. You “serve” the finished dish, sending the image of your plated meat (against a tablecloth of your choosing) via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail to friends and family members who will think you’re awesome for having grilled something so lovely for them. It’s silly, but it’s an experience well worth the 99 cents it costs. Or so I thought
